When buying an electric guitar, it may be useful to understand the music that you or someone likes to listen and would like to play. Certain guitars are known for providing that special tone found in that particular genre. We broke down our guitar section by types of guitars. It's also important to note that you are not restrained with a particular guitar for a genre, but these guitars can provide the classic tone for that genre. There are many artists that play different guitars that are not normally used for that style of music.

If you are or someone are interested in music such as blues or blues rock, then a Stratocaster style might fit your needs. Artists such as Jimmy Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Eric Clapton are great examples of players playing Strats. Of course, Strats are found in the rock world as well. Telecasters are known for rockabilly to country to rock. The Les Paul is the rock standard guitar featuring Jimmy Page, Joe Perry, Slash as good artist examples. The Les Paul could easily be found in Blues to Punk to Jazz as well.

Along with a guitar, you will need something that will amplify the sound. Amplifiers can be extremely expensive or quite affordable. For players just learning electric guitar, a low watt practice amp should be plenty to start out with. If you plan on playing in a band, then you will need to upgrade at some point to be heard in the mix. Amps are broken down into two general areas, solidstate or tube. Tube amps provide a warmer tone, while a solidstate amp would give you a more processed tone. Again, this depends on the music you'd like to play. Music with extreme distortion might benefit from a solidstate amp, and a classic rock/blues distortion could be achieved with a tube amp.

If the player is young, then they will most likely need a short scale neck so they can play the neck a bit easier. There are various looks and styles in short scale guitars, along with starter packs that would include everything that they will need.

Don't forget about the accessories, we have straps, picks, strings, tuners and cables.
